Jeremy Hanke embodies the very mission of The Respect the Send Challenge. His journey began in the world of snowboarding and oil & gas in Alberta, but a close call with a Size 3 avalanche in 2004 in the mountains of British Columbia redefined his purpose. He is not just a rider; he is one of the most dedicated avalanche educators, researchers, and cultural catalysts in the motorized backcountry community.
Jeremy lives the phrase, "You have to be involved to evolve." Following his near-miss, he dedicated his life to preventing others from making the same mistakes, founding Soul Rides—an avalanche education and consulting business.
Jeremy Hanke demands that a great send is not defined by luck, but by skillful, educated decision-making.
Jeremy’s judging criteria will be intensely focused on the "THE RESPECT" pillar. He doesn't just want to see gear; he wants to see knowledge, humility, and demonstrable planning.
For the Deep Line Masters in particular, Jeremy will be looking for video evidence that shows the rider has:
Prevention: Demonstrated planning and terrain selection that mitigates hazard before the ride.
Education: Applied knowledge of snowpack (e.g., brief shovel/test clips) and risk mitigation.
Preparation: Proof of training in emergency response, extraction, and navigation skills, which Soul Rides specifically teaches.
"There is a risk vs reward in life, learning to find the balance between that statement is where the flow state exists."
A backcountry rider who became a safety pioneer after a life-changing incident.
Jeremy has collaborated with top film companies like Brain Farm Cinemas (The Art of Flight) and led the creation of the motorized-specific outreach project, Throttle Decisions.
Research and Development: Driven by a commitment to data, he has spearheaded fundraising for a snowmobile impact study and authored multiple papers for the International Snow Science Workshop (I.S.S.W.), actively shaping how the industry understands machine-triggered avalanches.
Guiding Expertise: As a key figure in establishing standards for motorized backcountry guiding in Canada, Jeremy co-founded Mountain Stash Adventures (M.S.A.) in Revelstoke, BC, providing boutique guiding services focused on safe, custom exploration.
